SANReN National Backbone Network
The completion of the SANReN National Backbone Network is a momentous achievement for the higher education and research environment of South Africa.
The Meraka Institute of CSIR contracted Telkom to build the SANReN national backbone as a project to be completed by 1st December 2009. Telkom met this target with one day to spare and handed over to the CSIR on the 30th November 2009. CSIR announced the completion and the National Backbone went live on the 1st December 2009.
This national Backbone consists of six nodes : In Bloemfontein the node is located at the University of Free State Main Campus; In Tshwane the node is located at the CSIR campus; in the Eastern Cape the node is in the NMMU South Campus; in kwa-Zulu-Natal the node is in the DUT ML Sultan Campus and the SharkHead gateway is also located there also this where TENET’s Seacom capacity lands; In the Western Cape the node is in BreeHead( Internet Solutions, Bree Street Cape Town) and in Johannesburg the node is in the University of Witwatersrand Main Campus
The National Backbone dramatically increases the bandwidth and lowers the cost to the institutions of research and education networking including general internet access. TENET is operating the National backbone as part of the SANReN Network
The Board of TENET formally resolved to extend warm congratulations to the Minister of Science and Technology, the Hon Naledi Pandor, and her Department; to the President of the CSIR, Dr Sibusiso Sibisi and the Meraka Institute of the CSIR, and to Telkom SA Limited on the rapid deployment and successful commissioning of the much needed SANReN National Backbone Network.
